Kotick says Microsoft — the Xbox company — ultimately offered $2.5 billion for Mojang and Minecraft, a sum he felt was beyond Activision Blizzard’s appetite. “I said, ‘I’ll go airplane shopping with you, but you gotta take that offer,'” he remembers.

Phil Spencer and Microsoft completed the acquisition for the $2.5 billion figure, and Minecraft has now been part of Microsoft’s portfolio for more than a decade.

Kotick also commends Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, for his stewardship of Minecraft post-acquisition. In another sense, Minecraft’s connection to Activision Blizzard was later shaped indirectly by Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision — a deal finalised in 2023 after nearly two years of legal challenges.

Kotick departed Activision Blizzard after 32 years with the company, a tenure that included the Activision–Blizzard merger and many consequential shifts that helped reshape the games industry.

Microsoft’s seemingly first IP crossover with Activision Blizzard is giving a Minecraft spinoff to the Candy Crush dev.
