Billy Porter is offering fans a candid look at his health journey following a harrowing hospitalization for what he characterized as a “severe case of sepsis.” The acclaimed performer noted that the subsequent months of convalescence have been exceptionally demanding.
In a personal video shared via Instagram on Monday (Dec. 22), the Tony and Emmy Award winner spoke directly to his supporters, confirming that while he is still healing, his condition is improving.
“I want everyone to know that I am on the path to a full recovery,” Porter shared. “I haven’t reached the destination yet, but I am certainly moving forward.”
The actor revealed that his health crisis was triggered by urosepsis—a critical and potentially fatal complication arising when a urinary tract infection enters the bloodstream. “It was a grueling experience,” he admitted. “These past four months have been incredibly trying.”
Visibly moved by emotion, Porter credited his global audience for providing the strength needed to navigate the ordeal. “I wanted to express my deepest gratitude for your prayers, your love, and the healing energy you’ve sent my way,” he said. “I felt every bit of it. I truly believe I am here today because of my fans.”
This update provides context for his sudden professional hiatus in September. At that time, the Broadway production of Cabaret was forced to truncate its run after Porter withdrew to focus on his battle with the life-threatening infection.
Alongside his video message, Porter posted a spirited caption: “She’s ALIVE!!! Proof of life, PTL!!! Thank you all for the thoughts, prayers, and healing energy! Merry Christmas one and all!”
Despite the physical setbacks, Porter remains focused on his upcoming projects. He is slated to appear in the highly anticipated prequel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and is currently promoting his holiday feature, Christmas Karma, which is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
While acknowledging that his journey back to peak health continues, Porter’s outlook remains one of resilience. “I’m here,” he concluded. “And I am profoundly grateful.”
