Mariah Carey teased during a recent “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit that her unreleased grunge album might be released eventually.

During the online chat with fans on Friday, Oct. 30, held for the 25th anniversary of her album Glitter, Carey answered questions about her pets, writing, “I currently have 4 Jack Russells and I love them all so much!” She also addressed a potential collaboration with Lenny Kravitz, writing, “I love Lenny too… Lenny if you’re seeing this, call me!”

When asked whether she would release her grunge LP from the archives, Carey shared, “I get asked this about once a week. my answer is…#notyet (this is a hint!)”

Carey revealed in her 2020 memoir that she recorded a secret rock album titled Someone’s Ugly Daughter 25 years prior while working on her fifth studio LP, Daydream. While Daydream spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1995, Carey released the grunge counterpart under the pseudonym Chick with friend Clarissa Dane on lead vocals.

Fans have pressed Carey to release the original version of Someone’s Ugly Daughter since learning of its existence. “I’m so mad I haven’t done that yet,” she said in 2024 on Las Culturistas regarding the delay. “It’s a good album. OK, you will hear it. I was getting life from that, seriously. It was jokes, as well. They’re everlasting.”

Carey is currently focused on celebrating Glitter, which debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and served as the soundtrack to her film of the same name. She released a deluxe version featuring multiple bonus tracks on Friday for the 25th anniversary.

“Thank you for celebrating glitter!!!” the five-time Grammy winner told a Redditor who asked which track she had the most fun creating. “‘Lead The Way’ was one of my favorites to write and record and produce, but I love them all.”

Another user asked, “Remember when you met Prince while working on Glitter and he encouraged you to finish that song you had started instead of sampling ‘Nasty Girl’ by Vanity 6 ? Will we ever get to hear that demo ?”

“It’s a song that I never finished, I have no idea where it is but I loved Prince and still do,” she replied.

It is possible Carey might release the grunge album as a Christmas present, though it is unlikely given her focus on her festive catalog during recent holiday seasons. Her smash single “All I Want for Christmas Is You” holds the record for the second-longest run at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 22 nonconsecutive weeks. Ella Langley surpassed that mark this year when “Choosin’ Texas” cleared 25 weeks.

Regarding brand new material, Carey told fans on Reddit, “I’m always working on music and coming up with lyrics and ideas, but I don’t know numbers so I can’t tell you when exactly the next album will happen.”
