Project Shadowglass

Project Shadowglass is a visually arresting pixel-style indie experience that so closely mimics those viral, AI-generated “impossible” RPG mockups it could fool a double-take. The game has drawn strong interest not only from players but from established developers as well.

Baldur’s Gate 3 director and Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke noticed the project after its creator shared a Patreon update announcing more than 58,000 wishlists. Vincke replied on social media, praising the visuals and wishing the team well via a public post on Patreon and a short message on X. Dominick John, the developer behind Project Shadowglass and founder of Starhelm Studios, responded in kind.

In his announcement John explains: “Most people don’t know this, but I’ve been an indie hobbyist for two decades — making small mobile titles, participating in game jams, and building countless experimental prototypes. One of my main passions has been modernizing classic art styles.” He went on to mention the wave of AI-generated pixel-art “games” that circulated online — the kind of viral images that inspired many conversations about what those visuals could become in a real game — and linked examples on social platforms.

John describes his goal as recreating those “impossible” fantasy visuals many thought couldn’t be reproduced. After years of experimentation he says he’s finally achieved true perspective 3D pixel art — the central technical breakthrough behind Project Shadowglass. The result is precisely what his posts promise: a layered, retro-inspired aesthetic that feels both authentic and fresh.

Clearly, interest is strong — not just from players but from seasoned developers like Vincke — and reactions online have echoed that excitement. The game’s look evokes memories of older, ambitious RPGs such as Daggerfall for some observers. Now the hope is that the gameplay will match the visuals.
