Hideo Kojima aims to pioneer a new genre instead of focusing on existing ones

Nevertheless, the visionary developer still has several creative milestones he hopes to achieve. “On a thematic level, I’m interested in hard sci-fi,” Kojima remarked. “I’ve always loved deep-space settings, so I’d like to explore that. I’m also a big fan of Westerns. While period pieces interest me, they are already quite common, so I’m currently contemplating how to approach my next project uniquely.”

Fans have plenty to look forward to in the meantime. Kojima is currently deep in production on OD, a cryptic horror project published by Xbox and featuring high-profile Hollywood talent—an experiment whose final outcome remains a mystery even to its creator. Following that, he is set to return to the tactical roots that made him famous with Physint, a next-generation action-espionage title.

Reflecting on his design choices, Kojima believes that “elements that are too comfortable don’t stay with the player,” which is why he purposefully integrates “a sense of friction or discomfort” into his work to ensure a lasting impact.
