While Pilestedt had previously mentioned Magicka being review bombed, he clarified that this occurred recently due to fan backlash over Helldivers 2—specifically the controversy surrounding mandatory PlayStation account linking. This spillover effect is a growing trend; for example, disgruntled Genshin Impact players have famously targeted unrelated apps and games to voice their frustration with update cycles.

“The first Helldivers game suffered collateral damage from review bombing that I felt was unfair,” Pilestedt said. “I tweeted that it was akin to review bombing Magicka, which some took as a literal call to action.”

The unfortunate reality today is that Magicka’s Steam rating remains at a “Mixed” 58% positive, largely because the game remains unstable on modern systems with no official fixes on the horizon. Currently, the community relies heavily on independent modders to keep the game playable.

Last year, Arrowhead acknowledged similar stability issues within Helldivers 2, pausing new content to focus on a comprehensive technical overhaul. While Helldivers 2 has faced its share of criticism, it remains significantly more polished and functional than its spiritual predecessor, Magicka.

Pilestedt recently teased the possibility of developing a Magicka sequel. Fans are hopeful for a modern take on the unique spell-combining mechanics that actually offers a stable experience.

Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 has introduced a streamlined PC update that slashes file sizes by 85%, freeing up approximately 131GB of storage space.
