Apple bends again: The European Union requires the company to open NFC for third-party payment systems
In the near future, iPhone developers and users within the European Economic Area (EEA) will have the opportunity to use NFC to pay bypassing Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.
If the company had not taken such a step, it could face a fine of up to 10% of the global annual turnover.
This innovation will appear only in the European Union for now, however, more and more countries are applying or developing similar anti-monopoly laws against IT companies, which were introduced by the EU last year, so there is a chance this practice might be applied later in other countries.
