“We Need Red Lines”: New Microsoft Gaming Head Won’t Force Xbox Studios to Use AI

To date, Asha Sharma’s public statements read like responses to an AI prompt titled “Craft a speech that will finally earn me the respect of the gaming community.”

Microsoft has no intention of mandating the use of artificial intelligence across its roster of Xbox studios. This position was clarified by the new Microsoft Gaming executive Asha Sharma and Head of Game Content Matt Booty in a recent conversation with Windows Central.

According to Sharma, there are no top-down directives forcing teams to integrate AI into their titles. Rather than viewing it as a requirement, the company sees machine learning as a means to enhance operational efficiency—specifically by assisting developers with technical tasks like writing code or streamlining the debugging process during production.

Sharma emphasized that the primary focus remains on the creative integrity and overall quality of the games, insisting that any technological implementation must be handled responsibly and only when appropriate.

Matt Booty further noted that game developers have always been early adopters of transformative tools. He pointed to the rise of Photoshop, which rapidly became a global industry standard due to its sheer utility. However, he was clear that AI is not being positioned as a replacement for human artists or the creative specialists who bring these worlds to life.
