Voice actress on experience working on Catalina

What is it like to work on the voice acting of an important character in the Grand Theft Auto universe? Cynthia Farrell, who gave the voice to Catalina, the main antagonist, told about this on VŌC Podcast. GTA 3 and a third party actor GTA: San Andreas.

In life, Cynthia can be said to be the exact opposite of her GTA heroine. Singer, audiobook speaker, mother of two. She is calmer and friendlier than Catalina, and does not even have Latin roots. However, she mastered Spanish so well, which contributed to getting the role. Ms. Farrell describes her first experience with Rockstar Games (on the “troika”) as follows:

  • everything happened very quickly, the agent sent her to the loft, which was rented by the guys from R *, before the session, the actress could not read the script, so the image largely corresponds to her personal understanding and the directions that the developers themselves gave her, including “the Englishman, the owner of Rockstar »;
  • as it later became clear, that’s how she called Dan Houser, whom she described as a tough and very energetic guy;
  • at the time of recording, Cynthia was 9 months pregnant, but this did not give her any indulgences – she stayed in the booth for about 2 hours, without stops or breaks, only once going to the restroom (this fits very well with the pace and method of work that previously practiced by “rock stars”);
  • she was not involved in the motion capture process (mocap);
  • not particularly interested in games, the singer was surprised by the numerous comments about Catalina under the videos with her singing, did not know about the future fate of her character and told a funny story about how her daughters’ boyfriends were shocked to find out that their mother was the voice of that very fatal girl from GTA.

In addition, the conversation brought up the topic of working on audiobooks and the experience of voice acting for another video game (Batman: Dark Tomorrow 2003), and also found time to act out a scene from GTA: SA (mark 36:58) and a cappella performance by the singer (41:44).

This year, the actors involved in the series have already become guests of the podcast: James Aegashi – Vuzi from the same “San Andreas” – and Cooley Ranksbetter known as Little Jacob from GTA 4. Let us know if you’re interested in reading the highlights of those interviews.
