Digital Foundry has officially put Resident Evil Requiem through its technical paces. According to their deep dive, the RE Engine has undergone a massive evolution, with the title establishing a breathtaking new visual benchmark for the current console generation.
The tech experts highlighted the staggering level of detail found in the main character models for Leon and Grace. This latest iteration introduces sophisticated strand-based hair rendering, hyper-realistic fabric textures, individually shaded eyelashes, and even microscopic threads on clothing. The consensus is that these real-time models now exceed the quality of pre-rendered CGI seen in franchise films like Death Island.
Performance metrics for Resident Evil Requiem vary significantly across different hardware. On the PS5 Pro, players can toggle between two primary profiles: a Quality Mode featuring 60 FPS with full ray tracing and sharp 4K upscaling from a 1080p base, and a 120 FPS Performance Mode that disables ray tracing and uses a less refined upscaling solution. The standard PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X operate similarly to the PS5 Pro’s high-framerate mode but feature a locked refresh rate and no ray-tracing features. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series S targets a 720p base resolution and utilizes simplified hair physics.
From a design standpoint, the game seamlessly blends two distinct gameplay philosophies. Segments played as Grace adopt a first-person perspective focused on atmospheric puzzles, mirroring the style of RE7 and Village. In contrast, Leon’s chapters return to the franchise’s hallmark over-the-shoulder perspective, emphasizing high-octane action.
Digital Foundry has confirmed that comprehensive performance reviews for both the PC version and the Nintendo Switch 2 are forthcoming.
