Total War: Medieval III will be released before The Elder Scrolls VI, says Total War Vice President

The long-awaited successor to Total War: Medieval II has been nearly twenty years in the making.

Roger Collum, Vice President of the Total War franchise, recently shared insights into the development status and anticipated release window for Total War: Medieval III. According to Collum, the project still requires several years of work, a reality the studio is being entirely transparent about.

In a playful jab at the industry’s long development cycles, he joked that the team would likely “beat” the next Elder Scrolls title to market, humorously challenging Bethesda to “rise to the occasion for the sake of all of us.”

Collum also addressed community concerns regarding the term “pre-production.” He clarified that the game is far from just a collection of ideas; Medieval III currently exists in playable builds, with fundamental systems—such as siege mechanics, unit formations, and population dynamics—already undergoing rigorous testing.

The development team is committed to maintaining an open dialogue with its fanbase, inviting players to help shape the game’s evolution. The ultimate goal is not merely to produce a sequel, but to “revitalize historical Total War” and deliver the “definitive Total War sandbox experience set in the heart of the Middle Ages.”
