John Gonzalez, the lead creative designer at Obsidian during that era, highlighted the studio’s deep connection to the series. “There was a real Fallout DNA here,” he explained, referring to the team members who had previously worked at Black Isle Studios and Interplay on the original titles. Obsidian was essentially staffed by the creators of the series’ first two games, which made them a natural fit for the project.

Howard mentioned that Bethesda’s main directive was for Obsidian to focus on faction-based storytelling—a feature that has since become a hallmark of the game. Gonzalez emphasized that this was the core of the experience: “The defining characteristic of New Vegas was our relentless focus on player choice and its long-term consequences.” He described the game as a purely Obsidian-driven project, designed to give the player absolute narrative agency.

Looking toward the future, Todd Howard has also hinted that Bethesda is currently working on several unannounced projects within the Fallout universe.
