Todd Howard explains why Fallout: New Vegas development was entrusted to Obsidian

A stopgap project was needed to sustain the franchise’s momentum during the long wait for Fallout 4.

In a recent sit-down with Game Informer, the head of Bethesda Game Studios shared new insights into why Obsidian Entertainment was ultimately chosen to helm Fallout: New Vegas.

Todd Howard explained that the studio was essentially the “only logical choice” at the time. Bethesda had fully pivoted its internal resources toward the development of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and leadership realized that a fourth Fallout installment was still many years away from reality.

Seeking to bridge the gap between major releases, Bethesda turned to Obsidian—a team they knew intimately. The studio had already proven its ability to step into established universes and deliver high-quality sequels under tight constraints, most notably with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II.

Howard noted that the primary directive given to Obsidian was simple: ensure the gameplay revolved around a robust and impactful faction system.

John Gonzalez, Obsidian’s lead creative designer, reflects on the project’s success:

The studio carried the Fallout DNA, employing veterans who had worked on the original game and its sequel. What made New Vegas stand out was its emphasis on choice and consequence. It is a quintessential Obsidian experience—the core philosophy was to grant the player profound agency over the narrative, letting them truly dictate the story’s direction.
