Dedicated servers are slated for a gradual phase-out.
The development team behind Payday 3 recently evaluated the outcomes of a trial for a revamped networking architecture. Shifting away from reliance on dedicated servers, they introduced a peer-to-peer (P2P) framework, allowing players to connect directly with one another.
Starbreeze Studios shared feedback gathered from the player community regarding this transition. Over 60% of participants reported enhanced latency and overall performance, while roughly a quarter noted that their experience remained consistent with previous standards.
More than 68% of respondents encountered no connectivity issues or dropouts, with only 22.1% reporting infrequent disruptions during the testing phase.
Encouraged by these findings, Starbreeze intends to roll out P2P functionality in the February update. However, the developers clarified that the game will continue to rely primarily on dedicated servers until they are fully confident that the transition won’t compromise the user experience relative to the current state of the game.
