“The sharpshooter positioned on the elevated platform is ‘Johnny the Needle,’ a character from our preliminary outlines,” Nomura explained. “While he is entirely separate from the ‘Johnny’ seen in the final game, his core design traits were eventually woven into the character Reno. On the left staircase, you can see a prototype Avalanche member who, at the time, remained unnamed and lacked a defined narrative purpose.”
“Furthermore, in a departure from previous entries in the franchise, this art envisioned battles occurring within three-dimensional urban environments rather than on static battlefields,” the veteran developer added. “While technical limitations prevented this from appearing in the 1997 original, it has finally been achieved in the modern remake series. I hope fans continue to support this grand endeavor, where we are finally manifesting ideas that were once impossible to build.”
