“The Way of the Wind” may be Terrence Malick’s last film

The upcoming biblical epic The Way of the Wind may serve as the final cinematic statement from legendary director Terrence Malick. This perspective was recently shared by Géza Röhrig, who stars in the production.

Röhrig, who portrays Jesus Christ in the film, spoke about the project amidst ongoing speculation regarding a potential premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

“We haven’t crafted a merely picturesque or traditional film about Jesus like those that came before; instead, this is the work of a true maestro. It is seemingly his swan song, a project he has envisioned since the 1990s. Back then, a deal with Disney fell through because they wouldn’t grant him final cut privileges, which is when he wrote this screenplay. Despite being shot over three months across seven countries with a lean crew and a modest budget, he has sought to tell this story in the twilight of his life. His depiction of Jesus avoids ecclesiastical clichés. While a release might happen in May or perhaps the autumn, nothing is certain. You should expect an expansive, immersive film—and as far as my own acting career is concerned, I believe it concludes with this role,” Röhrig revealed on the Mazsihisz podcast.

Originally announced in 2019, The Way of the Wind features a prestigious ensemble cast, including Mark Rylance as Satan and Matthias Schoenaerts as the Apostle Peter, alongside Ben Kingsley, Joseph Fiennes, and Mathieu Amalric.
