Developers are intentionally pushing their game to its limits to anticipate the unpredictable creative chaos of their players.
The visionaries behind the next Divinity installment recently sat down to address a series of community inquiries. One fan, Skylam, asked if there was a particular moment or feature the team was especially eager for the public to experience.
Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, took point on this question, teasing a specific path for character relationships:
There’s so much we want to show, but we prefer to let the game speak for itself. However, it’s looking like lizard romance is going to be quite a popular choice.
Nick, Larian’s Lead Designer, alluded to a long-awaited gameplay mechanic without explicitly naming it, though many in the community are betting on the addition of swimming:
There was always something that bothered me while I was scouting the starting zones in Divinity Original Sin, DOS2, and Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s quite obvious when you think about it. In this Divinity, I can finally do what I’ve wanted to do in all our previous games.
When one participant asked for a “minor spoiler that sounds completely nonsensical until we actually play,” the Lead Writer replied with a single, cryptic word: “Alligator.”
He also provided insight into the studio’s narrative philosophy, explaining how Larian actively “breaks” its own systems to ensure a truly reactive experience:
The writing process is about welcoming chaos. We encourage it; we live in it. Usually, the first thing we do when testing our own scripts is to play them entirely out of order, sabotaging them in every way imaginable to see just how far we can stretch the boundaries. My favorite moments are when a player wanders so far off the rails they think they’ve left our vision behind—only to stumble upon a detail we left there specifically for them.
