Kerbal Space Program 2 fell short of expectations, but an alternative project is in the works.
An ambitious project that could serve as a successor to the Kerbal Space Program simulator has recently entered a new phase. The developers announced the release of a public pre-alpha build of the game.
A great deal of effort has gone into building the engine, much of it informed by the experience and guidance of key Kerbal Space Program developers, including creator Felipe Falanghe. This work required implementing a range of technical innovations using the modern BRUTAL Framework. That choice lets the team program in C#, render with Vulkan, and integrate third‑party libraries as needed.
At the moment, Kitten Space Agency allows moving prebuilt vehicles around a schematic representation of the real Solar System, but only some planets have textures. The team noted they have already started building a bespoke “Solar System” that will overhaul scales, textures, and other elements.
Because this is a pre‑alpha, technical issues are possible and many placeholder assets are used.
Graphics cards with limited VRAM may struggle and even crash. Numerous systems are still actively under development, so they may be substantially revised.
Gameplay footage is already being shared online:
