Sony is in talks to purchase Paramount

According to The New York Times, Sony and investment company Apollo Global Management are discussing the purchase of Paramount studios, as well as the “Mission Impossible” series and some other franchises.

Apollo previously offered Paramount a deal worth $26 billion, but the offer was rejected. The potential deal with Sony has already caused dissatisfaction among many of the film studio’s investors.

If Sony becomes a co-owner of Paramount, it would also acquire rights to the streaming service Paramount +.

However, the U.S. government may interfere with the deal. After Disney’s purchase of Fox assets in 2019, the Federal Communications Commission deferred mergers of major media, and the union of two major studios may not take place.
