Earlier, publisher Take-Two had insisted the initial delay would be the last. After months of silence, however, the studio announced another postponement. In a statement, Rockstar said the extra months are necessary to further polish the game and raise its overall quality.
According to journalist Tom Henderson, the postponement will cost about $10 million per month, or roughly $60 million in total.
A developer I spoke with estimated the additional cost at roughly $10 million per month. Accounting for salaries and other expenses, the total could approach $100 million.
Some estimate the total development cost of GTA 6 at around $2 billion, so this additional overrun is unlikely to have a major impact on the project’s profitability.
Henderson also noted that a spring release had always seemed unrealistic, even though there was no official announcement of a delay.
Meanwhile, Rockstar has faced criticism for firing employees accused of “data leaks.” Those workers say the company is using the accusations to suppress union activity and have organized a protest.
