In a twist of fate, numerous concepts originally designed for the cancelled Van Buren were woven into the fabric of New Vegas. Sawyer notes that Obsidian’s connection to the series’ roots helped preserve the authentic spirit of the earlier games. “It might be a simple perspective,” he noted, “but Obsidian’s design philosophy was naturally aligned with the tenets of the franchise. The DNA of Black Isle was deeply embedded in Obsidian, even as new talent joined the ranks.”
While Bethesda’s entry focused on vast exploration, Sawyer aimed for the profound player agency seen in the original CRPGs. “I wanted to channel what made the first game special: the freedom to wander anywhere, bypass critical story beats, and the ability to resolve the main quest through either total pacifism or absolute carnage,” Sawyer explained. “These elements were vital for New Vegas. We also aimed for that specific tonal shift—balancing grim, heartfelt themes with absurd, offbeat humor that has always been a Fallout staple.”
