Mewgenics Recoups 8-Year Development Costs Within Three Hours of Launch

Mewgenics gameplay featuring feline breeding mechanics

The highly anticipated feline-breeding roguelike Mewgenics has achieved a staggering financial milestone, recouping nearly a decade’s worth of development costs in a mere three hours. According to developer Tyler Glaiel in a recent conversation with IGN, the game’s performance is significantly outstripping even the most optimistic forecasts. Developed alongside The Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen, the turn-based RPG has already eclipsed the launch figures of Isaac’s various expansions.

McMillen noted that the February 10 debut was the strongest in his career, dwarfing previous records. While The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth previously held his personal high-water mark with roughly 40,000 units sold on day one, Mewgenics shattered that figure by moving 152,000 copies in under six hours. This rapid commercial momentum allowed the team to break even on their eight-year investment in just half that time.

The game’s popularity isn’t just reflected in sales, but in active engagement as well. Currently, Mewgenics is sustaining a massive player base, reaching a concurrent peak of 65,962 users—perilously close to Rebirth’s all-time record of 70,762. Glaiel admitted that while they were confident in the game’s quality, they didn’t expect to challenge the dominance of Isaac so quickly. With the weekend approaching, it is highly probable that the new title will set a new concurrent player record for the duo.
