id Software engineer Billy Khan said that in the coming years many more games will adopt ray tracing. Doom: The Dark Ages achieves striking visuals thanks to a mix of ray tracing and Nvidia technologies.
Game technology is constantly advancing, and developers continually push one another with new innovations. Ray tracing has emerged as a prominent technique, rapidly gaining traction. Titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle already employ it effectively, and Doom: The Dark Ages also benefits from this approach.
Billy Khan, id Software’s director of engine technology, commented: “I believe ray tracing will continue to evolve and appear in an increasing number of games over the next few years.”
Khan explained that ray tracing has become a foundational element of the id Tech 8 engine. id Software is actively researching and refining the technology with plans to incorporate it into future projects. He detailed how it elevates the visuals in Doom: The Dark Ages and highlighted Nvidia’s Shader Execution Reordering as a key optimization for ray-tracing workloads.
Path tracing works particularly well in tandem with DLSS ray-tracing, reducing noise and outperforming conventional denoising methods. The technique has become something of a visual “cheat code,” and with growing support from newer AMD GPUs, many studios will likely feel compelled to adopt it in their games.
