For those unfamiliar with the series, Reigns challenges players to survive as long as possible by making binary choices. Your deck contains encounters where every decision shifts your stats, and while a total collapse is inevitable, each failure provides insights for your next journey.
Nerial, the acclaimed studio behind the series, has previously adapted worlds like Game of Thrones and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Narrative designer Oscar Harrington-Shaw and design director Francois Alliot told GamesRadar+ that this Witcher spin-off focuses heavily on visceral combat mechanics.
“In the skirmish scenes, we aimed to capture the fluid ‘dance’ of a Witcher wielding his silver blade within our card-swiping format,” the developers explained. “The rhythmic combat takes inspiration from Crypt of the Necrodancer, requiring players to swipe left and right in time with the beat to parry attacks and prepare for a lethal riposte.”
When asked how the game appeals to fans of the RPGs or Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, the duo described it as a “Witcher fan-fiction simulator.” Since the entire game takes place within Dandelion’s storytelling, the scenarios are both plausible within the lore and delightfully exaggerated—the sort of tales a bard might spin after one too many drinks at the tavern.
“Players can anticipate witty reinterpretations of classic tales alongside entirely original adventures,” the team added. “It will feel both comfortably familiar and strikingly new to anyone acquainted with this world.”
Geralt’s mortality is a central theme here—he dies frequently, and in remarkably imaginative ways. Each failed run is essentially Dandelion revising his latest epic, endlessly experimenting with new ways to tell the story of the White Wolf’s heroic exploits and his inevitable, often comical, demises.
Reigns: The Witcher is slated for release on February 25. While the wait for The Witcher 4 remains long, this stylized card adventure offers a perfect bridge for fans returning to the Path.
In other news, a former developer discusses the “absolute idiocy” that led to a cancelled Witcher project, though he admits CD Projekt Red was the right studio to lead the series into the spotlight.
