Another commenter wonders if the trainer’s disappearance could be woven into Pokopia’s narrative, allowing players to “discover new things” about what happened as they progress. Meanwhile, another suggests the developers might keep things light, while some think the trailer hints that the trainer may have perished.
“Perhaps they fell through a dimensional rift and became a Faller, much like Anabel in Sun/Moon or Ingo in Legends: Arceus,” speculates one user. “I doubt the game will fully investigate the trainer’s fate, but it would be a compelling subplot.”
Pokémon has occasionally introduced surprisingly dark threads into its stories — Scarlet and Violet being a recent example — so it’s not out of the question that we could be controlling a Ditto abandoned after its trainer disappeared or died. The game’s adorable life-sim presentation masks a potentially somber backstory. We’ll have to wait until Pokopia launches to learn more.
