Pokémon Legends: Z‑A’s weirdest — and best — marketing stunt yet: real wrestlers dressed as Pokémon brawl while Pikachu and Eevee cheer in the background

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is under a month from release, and promotional activity is only going to escalate. Still, few stunts will top the game’s partnership with CMLL — Mexico’s storied wrestling promotion — which produced costumed luchadores, giant Pikachu and Eevee mascots cheering at ringside, and a main event that outshone many recent big-show finales.

CMLL presented “Pokémon Leyendas Z-A: Noche de Leyendas” last night at Arena México in Mexico City. The full two-hour card was streamed for free on YouTube — the replay is still available — and the production was a vivid, crowd-pleasing spectacle. Several performers wore Pokémon-themed ring attire, and the audience embraced the crossover wholeheartedly.

Perhaps the most striking detail is how well the crossover resonated. Arena México — often called the “cathedral of lucha libre” and seating around 16,000 spectators — provided a historic backdrop, and CMLL’s traditional fanbase meshed surprisingly well with Pokémon’s audience. See more about the venue on Wikipedia.

As luchablog noted on X in August, the themed show sold out about a month in advance. While I can’t directly compare it to every other CMLL outing, filling a 16,000-seat arena on the strength of a Pokémon-themed card is undeniably impressive.

I’ve played Pokémon for 17 years, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A makes me feel like I’m discovering battle systems all over again — in the best possible way.
