Overwatch 2 Steam peak surpasses Call of Duty and Battlefield ahead of major update

The renewed interest isn’t just a random occurrence. Blizzard recently detailed extensive modifications coming to the game. Overwatch 2 is essentially rebranding back to its original name, “Overwatch,” but the inclusion of five new heroes and major narrative shifts makes it feel almost like a third installment in everything but name.

Despite the excitement surrounding a ginger feline with a jetpack—memorably voiced by Jennifer Hale—the game’s Steam reputation remains a work in progress. The all-time rating for Overwatch is currently “Mostly Negative,” with roughly 65% of its 138,000 reviews being critical. On a more optimistic note, recent sentiment has shifted toward the positive, with 51% of newer reviews giving the game a thumbs up.

As a long-time player, it’s clear the hero shooter is in its strongest state since its peak years nearly a decade ago. With frequent content updates, a more reasonable monetization strategy, and a diverse roster that encourages both strategic and aggressive playstyles, the title is finding its footing again. Expect these numbers to climb even higher once the new hero officially drops—that cat is clearly ready for some heavy lifting.

The newest Overwatch voice actor recently shared her thoughts on the character’s controversial redesign, encouraging fans to “keep rooting for the version of her that could be.”
