In the interview featured above, lead character artist Dmitri Berman explains that while multiple playable races were considered early in *Avowed’s* development, the technical implementation was daunting. “It’s a massive undertaking to nail down,” Berman noted, citing the game’s complex parkour mechanics, first-person combat, and weapon scaling. Because different races vary significantly in size and shape, creating a cohesive first-person experience required additional refinement that the initial development cycle couldn’t accommodate. Now, with more time, the team is ready to deliver those varied perspectives to the community.

There’s a good reason it earned a spot as one of our top games of its release year.

“RPGs can be divisive”: Obsidian reflects on Avowed—navigating those Skyrim comparisons, the decision behind the lack of romances, and what lies ahead for this 2025 standout.
