Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian Studios and creative director of Baldur’s Gate 3, recently noted that Wizards of the Coast granted the development team “all the freedom we needed” to bring the Dungeons & Dragons universe to life. However, he admitted that translating the intricacies of the tabletop rules into a digital RPG presented its own set of structural hurdles.
During a comprehensive Reddit AMA featuring eleven lead developers from Larian, the team fielded inquiries regarding the studio’s ongoing work on the Divinity series. One user specifically asked if the oversight of Wizards of the Coast, as the D&D license holder, ever stifled their creativity, and whether owning their own IP would change Larian’s approach in the future.
Vincke emphasized that the studio enjoyed total autonomy regarding the use of the D&D intellectual property. “We had all the freedom we needed on BG3,” Vincke clarified. Yet, while the creative relationship with the publishers was seamless, the technical transition from paper to pixels was not without friction.
“The game was built upon the 5e rule set,” Vincke explained, referring to the current Dungeons & Dragons edition. “That system was specifically engineered for tabletop play, not video games. Most of our constraints originated there.” While the developers didn’t enumerate every specific challenge, community members in the comments speculated that issues like level-scaling and high-level spell implementation were likely the main culprits.
With Larian now returning to the Divinity franchise with full creative control and no external rule sets to bind them, fans are eager to see the next evolution of their RPG mastery.
Baldur’s Gate 3 recently secured Steam’s ‘Labor of Love’ award, a testament to two years of consistent post-launch refinement and community engagement. As the team noted, it’s an “incredible way to kick off the new year.”
