The drop rates are back to their pre-holiday event percentages! That said, the team saw the positive reception and are investigating a longer-term increase. January 8, 2026
The player base hasn’t held back in its criticism. One frustrated fan pointed out the irony of acknowledging “positive reception” while simultaneously removing the very feature players enjoyed. Others lamented that the game felt far more rewarding and respectful of their time during the event, making the return to the old grind feel sluggish by comparison.
This move appears counter-intuitive to many, as rewarding loot loops are the lifeblood of the looter-shooter genre. While Gearbox likely aims to fine-tune the balance before committing to a permanent change, the decision to pull the plug on the “fun” in the interim has left a sour taste in the community’s mouth.
Prominent Borderlands content creator and streamer Ki11er Six echoed these sentiments, calling the decision a “massive fumble.” Top-rated comments on his posts emphasize that the developers need to cater more to casual players who can’t afford to sink hundreds of hours into the grind just to see a specific piece of gear. Gearbox would be wise to fast-track their “long-term” solution to regain player goodwill.
In other news, Borderlands chief Randy Pitchford recently remarked that the gaming industry is still in its infancy: “We haven’t reached our ‘Citizen Kane’ moment yet. We’re still just figuring this all out.”
