Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the creators of the game Palworld
“Big N” has filed a lawsuit jointly with The Pokémon Company against the studio Pocketpair, the developer of Palworld, seeking a court order to halt the distribution of the game and to award compensation “on the grounds that Palworld, the game developed and released by the defendant, infringes numerous patent rights.”
Which specific rights Palworld violates are not officially specified, but it is evident that the creatures in the game greatly resemble Pokémon. However, the publication VGC writes that Nintendo’s claims could primarily be focused on the copying of game mechanics rather than character design, as the lawsuit pertains to patent infringement and not copyright infringement.
Palworld is a multiplayer survival game, one of its key mechanics involves capturing creatures that closely resemble Pokémon. In January 2024, the game was released on Xbox Series and PC.
