Yoko Taro and Hideki Kamiya recently appeared on a panel at G-CON 2025 to explore the philosophy of game design and their creative processes. Kamiya discussed plans for an Okami sequel and growing the development team. Yoko Taro said he’s juggling numerous projects, but many are shelved partway through development.
People often ask me, “Why aren’t you making a new NieR?” or say, “Yoko Taro isn’t doing anything.” Many of my projects never reach release. I’ve been paid for the work, so that’s not the issue, but people assume I’ve been inactive simply because those projects don’t come out.
Taro remains upbeat — he prefers risking failure multiple times rather than putting out mediocre titles.
I don’t regard that as a negative outcome. If a project would end up being something strange, it’s better not to release it at all.
Fans are hoping for a NieR revival by 2027, the tenth anniversary of Automata’s release, but prospects currently look slim.
