Lords of the Fallen II: Combat Evolution Dev Update

While Lowe is naturally promoting his project, his critique of the “Souls” formula carries weight. Character re-specification in FromSoftware titles is often gated behind late-game milestones or finite resources. In games like Elden Ring, players frequently find themselves tethered to a single high-tier weapon simply because they’ve already sunk limited upgrade materials into it.
Lords of the Fallen introduces a more fluid dynamic. By lowering the barriers for stat requirements and offering a more accessible weapon upgrade path, the game encourages players to swap gear without the fear of wasting resources. This contrast is especially sharp when compared to Bloodborne‘s linear progression or Sekiro‘s hyper-focused action design.
This design tension mirrors wider RPG debates, such as Obsidian’s choice to restrict respeccing in The Outer Worlds 2 to emphasize consequence, versus the total freedom found in Baldur’s Gate 3. In the Soulslike genre, it ultimately comes down to whether a developer prioritizes the weight of a permanent journey or the creativity allowed by moment-to-moment flexibility. While I refined a single “spell-blade” for a hundred hours in Elden Ring, the prospect of shifting from a heavy crusader to a nimble dual-wielder in Lords of the Fallen offers its own brand of satisfaction.
Lords of the Fallen 2 is currently in development, with the team aiming for a cohesive experience that mirrors the evolution of the Batman Arkham series.
