The culprit was an expired SSL certificate. SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is a vital security protocol that ensures data transmitted through a site or application is encrypted and protected. When these certificates lapse, modern security protocols treat the service as unsafe, rendering it functionally inaccessible to protect the user base.
Resourceful players managed to bypass the login barrier by manually rolling back their system clocks, though this was only a temporary fix. Investigation into the game’s security credentials revealed that Riot last updated its SSL certificate on January 7, 2016, with an expiration date of January 4, 2026. While a decade-long window likely felt like an eternity back then, the deadline arrived with startling speed.
It’s easy to imagine a long-forgotten Google Calendar alert pinging an empty desk or a former employee’s inbox. Regardless of how the oversight occurred, it was corrected shortly after the outage began—and Riot isn’t taking any chances this time. The certificate has reportedly been renewed for a full century.
Riot Games has provided little official explanation beyond a social media update confirming the server issues. Given the new 100-year expiration date, we likely won’t see a repeat of this specific clerical error until 2125. Hopefully, someone at Riot marks their calendar for the next century.
