Even today, Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to outperform modern releases in several key technical departments.
The level of detail in Red Dead Redemption 2 is so meticulously crafted that, even seven years after its debut, the project is still held up as the gold standard for the industry. However, a growing sentiment suggests that these side-by-side comparisons may be fundamentally unfair.
An IGN journalist recently criticized content creators who use manipulative comparisons, specifically targeting those who pit “Mafia: The Old Country” against the technical juggernaut that is RDR2.
The authors of such comparison videos often ignore the sheer disparity in resources: Rockstar Games operates with an astronomical budget and a workforce of approximately 1,600 people. In contrast, Hangar 13, the studio behind the new Mafia title, employs fewer than 300 staff members.
The journalist also pointed out that technological advancement is no longer a “constant” climb where chip power doubles every two years. This stagnation in hardware growth means that high-fidelity projects from a decade ago can still hold their own quite impressively against today’s contemporary titles.
Judging by the comments, this perspective from IGN resonated deeply with the gaming community.
