Marking a new record streak, Jonathan McReynolds notches his fourth consecutive No. 1 on Billboard‘s Gospel Airplay chart (dated Aug. 7) as “Grace” reaches the summit.
In the tracking week ending Aug. 1, the song increased by 10% in plays, according to MRC Data.
“This has been an amazing journey,” McReynolds tells Billboard. “I am so grateful for the love and support. My hope is that we continue to infuse excitement into the world about gospel music. Thank God for His grace.”
“Grace,” which McReynolds wrote solo, follows prior Gospel Airplay No. 1 “Movin’ On,” a collaboration with Mali Music that led for a week last October. The 31-year-old McReynolds, who hails from Chicago, scored his first No. 1 in September 2018 when “Not Lucky, I’m Loved” paced the chart for a week, followed by “Make Room,” also a one-week leader, in December 2019.
McReynolds passes Kirk Franklin, who is on an active run of three straight Gospel Airplay No. 1s in as many chart appearances. “Strong God” became his third consecutive leader, and eighth overall, when it reigned for two weeks last December.
Franklin boasts the most Gospel Airplay No. 1s, dating to the chart’s March 2005 launch. McReynolds is now tied for eighth place with Zacardi Cortez, Todd Dulaney, Charles Jenkins & Fellowship Chicago and Tasha Cobbs Leonard.
McReynolds first reached Gospel Airplay in September 2012. Along with his four No. 1s, he hit No. 5 in 2015 with “Gotta Have You.”
As for more regarding Mali Music, he and McReynolds are set to tour this fall, billed as Jonny X Mali. The first show is scheduled for Sept. 30 in Atlanta.
