CD Projekt Co-founder Michał Kiciński Acquires GOG.com

Michał Kiciński takes full ownership of GOG.com

In a significant shift for the digital gaming landscape, Michał Kiciński, a founding figure behind both CD Projekt and GOG.com, has taken complete control of the classic gaming storefront. Kiciński, who established CD Projekt in 1994 alongside his brother Marcin and later launched GOG in 2008, has now acquired 100% of the platform’s shares.

Although Kiciński officially stepped down from his executive role at CD Projekt back in 2010, he has remained a pivotal figure within the company’s orbit. For nearly two decades, GOG.com operated as a subsidiary under the CD Projekt umbrella, but a recent announcement confirms that the storefront is now an independent entity under Kiciński’s sole stewardship.

Explaining the decision to divest, CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski noted that the company is currently prioritizing a massive internal development roadmap. “With our focus now fully on an ambitious development roadmap and expanding our franchises with new high-quality products, we felt this was the right time for this move,” Nowakowski stated.

For Kiciński, this acquisition is a return to the platform’s foundational roots. He reaffirmed GOG’s long-standing commitment to consumer rights and preservation, stating, “From the very beginning, GOG has always been built on strong values and clear principles. When Marcin Iwiński and I came up with the idea for GOG, the vision was simple: bring classic games back to players and ensure that once you buy a game, it truly belongs to you — forever.”

While it is still early to determine how this change in leadership will influence the storefront’s day-to-day operations or its library expansion, the shift back to independent ownership suggests a renewed focus on GOG’s original mission: providing a DRM-free sanctuary for PC gaming history.
