Sometimes the shortest route pays off. An indie team released The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles on Steam with a low-budget Japanese localization, and the result proved unexpectedly amusing — drawing attention from Japanese players.
The tale was told by Paolo Nicoletti, one of the creators of The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles, a classic dungeon crawler set in a fantastical world. In August 2025, Nicoletti and his team decided to put out a Japanese demo of their game on Steam.
Because the localization was amateurish, the Japanese version was labeled “Kuso Dungeon,” which literally translates as “Crappy Dungeon.” The name caught the attention of Japanese players and quickly spread across social media, which — according to Nicoletti in an interview with Game*Spark — boosted the game’s popularity.
“Everyone laughed — I did too. It was pure chance, but it helped the game become more popular.”
After the Japanese store page went live, the game’s rank on Steam’s most-anticipated lists climbed sharply.
The Italian developer calls it an example of “accidental marketing.” The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles now enjoys predominantly positive reviews; players note that without the translation flub they likely would never have discovered it.
