The PSSR2 graphics upscaling technology is reportedly planned for 2026 on the PS5 Pro and is expected to be a major upgrade, delivering image quality comparable to AMD’s jump from FSR 3 to FSR 4.
Blogger Moore’s Law Is Dead reported that the source is a game developer who noted Sony is aware of visual artifacts when using PSSR on the PS5 Pro and has supplied studios with tools to address those issues.
Sony’s developer documentation mentions Multi-Frame Super Resolution 2 (MFSR2) — the internal codename for PSSR2. According to the leak, the algorithm requires fewer input frames, uses less memory, and reduces GPU load while delivering improved image quality. Sony claims the visual improvement will be similar to the transition from FSR 3 to FSR 4.
PSSR2 is built on a new API and promises higher performance and enhanced image fidelity, while updated debugging tools should reduce the number of visual glitches. FSR 4 support is also expected and is said to run on the PS5 Pro alongside PSSR2.
