Netflix has only further muddied the circumstances surrounding Henry Cavill’s exit from The Witcher.
As part of the promotion for the fourth season of The Witcher, Netflix published a piece about Liam Hemsworth — who will appear as Geralt in place of Henry Cavill. The article originally claimed Hemsworth was offered the role as early as 2020 — two years before Cavill publicly announced his departure. That detail set off a flurry of online debate: if talks really began that early, it suggests any disagreement between the actor and the show’s creators may have originated long before it became public.
Shortly after the story drew attention, Netflix quietly edited the article and removed the year without offering an explanation. That change only deepened suspicion and fueled further discussion among fans.
Official confirmation for Cavill’s departure has not been provided. In a recent interview, showrunner Lauren Hissrich maintained that the actor left voluntarily to pursue other projects. Yet many viewers have long speculated about a creative rift: Cavill reportedly pushed for a portrayal more faithful to Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and CD Projekt Red’s games, while the writing team favored a different approach.
If the claim about early talks with Hemsworth is accurate and appeared in the article by mistake, it could imply that disagreements began between the first and second seasons. For reference, the first season of The Witcher premiered in December 2019 and the second season arrived in December 2021.
Either way, without an official statement from Netflix these theories cannot be confirmed or dismissed. Viewers will have to wait for the fourth season’s premiere on October 30, 2025, to judge for themselves how The Witcher fares with a new Geralt.
