GTA: Trilogy – The Latest Update Significantly Improved the Definitive Edition

Yesterday marked the third anniversary since the release of GTA: Trilogy — Definitive Edition, and today Rockstar Games has released a long-awaited update for PC and the latest consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S), which enhances the overall user experience. The download will begin automatically when attempting to launch the game (in RGL: “Trilogy” — 4.15 GB; “Vice City” — 8.83 GB; “San Andreas” — 18.38 GB).

The developers not only added classic lighting (which can be enabled in the graphics settings menu), that made the mobile version much more appealing than the others, but also introduced a whole range of other fixes. Players, particularly Besk, have already noticed that:

  • All mentions of Grove Street Games, the studio that ruined the original “Trilogy,” have been removed.
  • Dates have been added to the save information.
  • The map of Liberty City and the player’s position on it have been corrected.
  • An old glitch that allowed players to bypass the story progression by crossing from the first island (Portland) to the second (Staunton Island) over the tunnel has been removed.
  • The puddle near the second hideout is now more realistic, without strange reflections.
  • The garage in Shoreside Vale has been repaired (previously only one set of doors would open, now all three do).
  • Some poorly looking interiors have been removed.
  • Players can now pause the game even during cut-scenes.
  • Claude’s and Tommy’s hands are now positioned correctly when aiming while moving.
  • From now on, in “Trilogy” and “Vice,” players can run with a shotgun and flamethrower drawn and fire them (in the classic versions, protagonists could only walk slowly with these weapons).
  • CJ’s animations—crouching, biking, and drinking Sprunk (hand placed correctly on the can)—have been fixed.
  • Swimming speed has been increased.
  • The effects of fire and shattering glass, as well as raindrops during driving, have been revamped.
  • Shadows (for example, from buildings) now move smoothly instead of jerking.

Currently, this is the most detailed list of changes; even the official site doesn’t list everything.

The only downside—it’s reported in the community that the launch on Steam Deck is broken. To solve the issue, set the value -dx12 in the appropriate place.
