“GTA in Anime Style”: Ananta Accused of Plagiarism

After a run of positive reviews, the project has come under scrutiny. The developers of Ananta are facing allegations of borrowing from other well-known games.

Ananta, formerly known as Project Mugen, is an ambitious Chinese title positioned as NetEase’s response to the titans of the open-world genre. The game is being developed by Naked Rain and NetEase Montreal, with NetEase acting as publisher. The project has been reworked and refreshed — according to reports, the team aims for Ananta to rival the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. Instead of the anticipated player enthusiasm, the game has increasingly made headlines for controversy.

Within the community, players have accused the developers of replicating animations and mechanics from Spider-Man, Watch Dogs, and GTA 5. Both character movements and combat sequences have been singled out. Some fans warn that a lack of originality could harm the project, while others argue that not every animation must be built from scratch. Especially given Sony’s backing and promotion on PlayStation — outright copying could carry serious consequences.

The developers have not issued a statement yet. It’s possible the studio is intentionally using familiar design elements to gain traction faster and to offer players a recognizable gameplay feel.
