A massive wave of players recently sought to revisit this Rockstar classic.
Grand Theft Auto fans recently turned their attention to a project called dos.zone, where developers introduced a way to play GTA: Vice City directly within a web browser.
The site initially offered a “free limited demo,” with the creators clarifying that the project was built upon an open-source version. They emphasized that it was a non-commercial endeavor with no official ties to Rockstar Games.
It appears the demand to play Vice City in a browser was far greater than anticipated. The sudden influx of traffic caught the developers off guard, leading them to take the demo offline shortly after its launch.
Following the shutdown, the team released a statement citing mounting bandwidth costs and potential legal risks. As a result, users are now required to provide their own original game files to run GTA: Vice City through the browser interface:
Owing to the project’s unforeseen popularity and the subsequent rise in hosting costs, as well as to avoid potential legal issues with copyright holders, we have disabled the demo version. However, you can still experience the full version by providing your own original game assets.
