During the latest PlayStation State of Play, Sony Santa Monica stole the spotlight by confirming that the iconic original God of War trilogy is officially being remade. To the surprise of many, they also shadow-dropped a brand-new 2D spin-off titled God of War: Son of Sparta, which is available for purchase immediately.
The State of Play presentation concluded with this massive double reveal. While the announcement of the remade trilogy generated significant hype, Sony was quick to manage expectations; the project is still in its infancy. A logo served as the primary confirmation, with no gameplay footage or release window shared yet. Fans should expect a lengthy wait as development is in the preliminary phases, according to the studio.
In contrast to the long-term wait for the remakes, God of War: Son of Sparta arrived as a day-one surprise. Crafted by Mega Cat Studios, this 2D adventure serves as a prequel centered on Kratos’ younger days in Sparta. It specifically explores his relationship with the original Atreus—the legendary Spartan warrior Kratos fondly remembered during the 2018 reboot. The game features visceral side-scrolling combat and the return of TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos. Players can pick up the Standard Edition for $30 or the Digital Deluxe Edition for $40.
These announcements finally validate rumors that have been swirling through the gaming community for years. Speculation regarding a trilogy overhaul has persisted for nearly two years, while whispers of a Greek-era side story first gained traction last March.
The God of War remake trilogy is currently in active development, while God of War: Son of Sparta is ready to play now on PlayStation 5.
