The latest PlayStation State of Play delivered a major surprise tonight, unveiling several highly anticipated titles—none more shocking than the stealth-release of a new 2D God of War spin-off titled Sons of Sparta.
While rumors of a God of War Greek trilogy remake have set the internet ablaze, Sons of Sparta offers a completely different gameplay experience. According to Sony’s official blog post, this 2D action-platformer serves as a canonical prequel. It explores Kratos’ brutal youth as he undergoes the legendary Agoge training alongside his brother, Deimos. Despite the shift in art style, the developers have confirmed that the narrative is 100% integral to the series’ lore.
Even more impressive is the fact that God of War: Sons of Sparta is available right now on the PS5. You can find it on the PlayStation Store, with the Standard Edition retailing for $29.99 and a Digital Deluxe version available for $39.99.
