Ghost in the Shell Trailer

The veteran director has long been vocal about his obsession with Bethesda’s nuclear sandbox. In a previous discussion with The Film Stage, he explained his unconventional approach to the game. When Oshii leaves Vault 111, he follows a very strict set of self-imposed rules.

His only companion is the faithful Dogmeat, and he strictly avoids glitches or exploits. More impressively, he refuses to use any character buffs or stat-boosting consumables. Base-building, a core mechanic for many, is entirely ignored in his playthroughs.

Instead of following the narrative path of the “Sole Survivor,” Oshii roleplays as a nomadic scavenger. While he dismisses the main quests, he maintains one grim objective: if the person responsible for the death of his wife and the kidnapping of his son appears, he will not hesitate to open fire. The same ruthless justice applies to his child, should they turn out to be a villain.

Refusing to align with any of the game’s factions, Oshii has turned a title he expected to play for a year into a decade-long journey. As Bethesda looks toward the development of Fallout 5, they can count this high-profile endorsement as a testament to the enduring allure of their open-world design.

Interesting Fact: The original Fallout developers initially weren’t sold on the game’s iconic name.
