Gears of War Returns to Its Roots: Developers Call E-Day the Series’ Most Ambitious Project

The Coalition, alongside partner studios Sumo and Disbelief, expressed their sincere gratitude to the community following the successful launch of Gears of War: Reloaded. “We appreciate you being part of this journey with us!” the developers shared in a recent update.

As the franchise prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026, all eyes are on Gears of War: E-Day. The Coalition has described this upcoming title as the most daring and expansive project in the series’ history. Built from the ground up on Unreal Engine 5, the game is set to deliver a complete visual overhaul alongside fundamentally modernized gameplay mechanics.

Gears of War: E-Day transports players back to the very beginning of the saga, chronicling the harrowing initial confrontation between Marcus, Dom, and the Locust Horde. The studio emphasizes that this prequel serves as a perfect entry point for those new to the franchise, with further details expected to be revealed in the near future.

“With the 20th anniversary of Gears of War approaching, we can think of no better tribute than the launch of Gears of War: E-Day. This is our most ambitious undertaking yet, forged in Unreal Engine 5 to ensure players feel truly immersed in the Gears universe through entirely new ways to play. By returning to our roots—the moment Marcus and Dom first encounter the Locust—we are creating the ultimate gateway for everyone to experience this world. We look forward to sharing more throughout the coming year.”
