The inevitable end of Amazon’s ambitious fantasy MMO, New World, now has a definitive date: servers will officially go dark on January 31, 2027. As the community mourns the imminent closure of Aeternum, Alistair McFarlane—Chief Operations Officer at Facepunch Studios, the developer behind hits like Rust and Garry’s Mod—has stepped forward with a surprising interest in preserving the dying game.
McFarlane took to social media to voice his support for the title, tagging Amazon Games directly with a bold proposition: “$25 million, final offer.” In a subsequent post, he emphasized his stance on gaming preservation, stating, “Games should never die.” While the offer appeared on Twitter—hardly a formal boardroom for multi-million dollar acquisitions—and followed a lighthearted exchange with fellow Facepunch staff, the sentiment has struck a chord with the player base.
If this playful bid turned into a serious negotiation, it would certainly have the backing of the gaming community. Sequisha, a prominent survival game streamer, noted that Facepunch acquiring New World and utilizing its proprietary Azoth engine could represent “one of the best timelines” for the genre’s future.
