The purge affects a broad range of software, from the 1992 flight sim Stunt Island and the 1997 Hercules Action Game to the more modern 2014 release Disney Fairies: Tinker Bell’s Adventure. Sadly, the delisting isn’t limited to movie tie-ins; several LucasArts cult classics were also caught in the crossfire. This includes the 2003 comedic shooter Armed and Dangerous, the eccentric world-building simulator Afterlife, and Lucidity—one of the final projects developed internally by the legendary studio before its restructuring.
Regardless of their critical standing, the unceremonious removal of these titles is a significant blow to digital preservation efforts. Because these games lack the massive competitive following of titles like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the odds of a digital revival are slim. As history has shown with the Marvel Ultimate Alliance re-releases, even when classic titles do return, their stay on digital shelves is often temporary.
Disney has yet to offer an official comment on the situation. While some might jokingly speculate that these games were sacrificed to ensure Cory in the House maintains its status as a cult legend, the reality is a disappointing loss for game history. On a brighter note for fans of classic Disney, Capcom’s beloved NES Disney compilation may soon find a new home on the Nintendo Switch, according to a recently discovered ESRB rating.
