When discussing the specific advantages of moving to a more modern engine, Carter immediately pointed to “load screens and optimization.” He explained that these were the primary hurdles for the Fallout London team as well. “That was our biggest complaint—rightly so—that our game wasn’t optimized,” Carter said, explaining that the decision was made too late in development to pivot. He revealed that the team’s desire to avoid frequent loading screens directly clashed with the engine’s capabilities.

Carter highlighted the Eastminster area of the mod, which became notorious for its instability. This was a direct result of pushing the engine past its intended limits to maintain immersion. “We were just trying to literally slap down walls on anything to optimize it by the end,” he confessed.

Ultimately, Carter believes that for Bethesda to deliver a truly modern experience, they must prioritize seamless exploration. “We didn’t want to have load screens. It would have really taken away from the vibe, and we paid the price for it because the engine wasn’t suitable for what we wanted to achieve,” he said. “If they have to upgrade it, that’s what they need to solve: get rid of the load screens and allow better optimization.”
